LIFEGUARD CLASS
YMCA members may sign up for classes teaching lifeguarding, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), proper use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), and first aid. Upon successful completion of these classes, participants may apply for an aquatics position within the YMCA.

Prerequisites:
- Students must be at least 15 years of age by the end of the class to participate; students must
show valid proof of age to complete class
- Swim 300 yards continuously using these strokes in the following order:
100 yards front crawl, 100 yards breaststroke, 100 yards mixture of front crawl/breaststroke
- Swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet, retrieve a
10-pound object, return to the surface and swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object
and exit the water without using ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds. When returning to
the starting point, your face must remain above water and the student must hold the 10-pound
object with both hands
All classes will be held at the Powhatan County Public Library, as well as both of the Powhatan and Midlothian YMCAs. Participants are responsible for transportation to and from all locations. Students will be told the first day of class what days they will need transportation.
